Straight from the success of Straight Outta Compton and Ride Along, Ice Cube is set to star in Humbug. This will be a retelling of the Charles Dickens - A Christmas Carol (Scrooge). Granted most people will probably see this as an urban retelling of this classic story which has been done many times. However, I think that Ice Cube may be able to add a fresh take to a stale story.
Apparently, four studios thought this was a good idea considering there was a bidding war between Universal, MGM, New Line and Disney. However, Universal won out. Ice Cube will play a wealthy real estate mogul shown a path to redemption by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Cube is slated to get eight figures for this role as well as producing. Sounds like this could be promising.
Cube will also reteam with Tim Story from Ride Along. It is scheduled for a possible 2017 release. This appears to be the third project as of late that Universal has snagged from other studios. They got Ride Along when New Line dropped it and Straight Outta Compton when Warner Brothers dropped it, so they appear to be on a roll.
I just might be looking forward to this one.
