F Gary Gray to Reboot Men in Black
F Gary Gray to Direct MIB
This news dropped yesterday that famed director F Gary Gray was looking to head up a Men in Black reboot. Its been six years since Men in Black 3, the last installment of the series and over 20 years since the original movie debuted in 1997. Since all things old are new again, its no real surprise that MIB is on the slate to get rebooted.
Word is that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not be involved in this project as the new movies look to explore the world around the MIB and not necessarily focusing on the actions of specific agents. And that sounds good on paper, but when rubber hits the road and money needs to be spent, will the company be strong enough to not fall into the comfortable trope of having Will Smith star in the movie. Because lets be frank, MIB 2 is a terrible movie no matter what anyone tells you and the fact they didn't have Linda Fiorentino in that movie still burns me till this day. MIB 3 was slightly better because of the performance by Josh Brolin, but neither movie captured the freshness of the original and just became vehicles for Will Smith to be "Will Smith". Possibly bringing in two new agents and focusing on world building would be a great way for the series to feel fresh again.
I love the original MIB and the cartoon that was on UPN short after the movie debuted. A more serious tone movie that has more thrills than laughs could make for a refreshing start to a franchise that is really dead in the water at this point.
