Black Cosplay DragonCon 2023

Over the seven years of Brothascomics and attending comic cons all over the southeast, we conistently highlight cosplayers of color.  Comic Cons can often being large and intimidating for people of color and we look to highlight those creators who are open with their fandom and give them a spotlight to show off their hardwork and their passion for the Blerd/Nerd Community.  Here are a few of the interviews from 2023.  You can find more on our Youtube page.  Link is listed below!!

DragonCon Day 1

For the 5th year in a row, the team from Brothascomics was blessed to media cover the event.  This year, I was able to add my daughter to the team to help get interviews and help coordinate the coverage.  We live in Florida so we made the 7 hour trip up the ATL on Thursday night and went to pick up badges Friday morning.  For those who have never been, badge pick up can be a process and even on an Early Friday morning, the line was long but we were able to meet some cool cosplays while in line. The line processed quickly once they opened and we were able to get our badges and head out on our adventure.

Now for new Dragoncon attendees, you really need to have a plan on what you are going to do and when you are going to do it.  Thursday and Friday's are always the best days to head to America's Mart.  This is where you can get all your DragonCon swag from all the vendors and buy and meet the creators of your favorite comics.  Waiting to do America's Mart on Saturday is a rookie mistake as- even on Friday there is a long line to get into the mall.  But once in there are 5 floors of vendors, creators, food, and all kinds of fun!

If you are headed to DragonCon for multiple days and want to meet the Celebrities, the day that most our there is Saturday; however, Saturday is super crowded.  I also recommend going to the parade- even if you are skipping the con.  Its family friendly and so much fun.  This year I streamed most of the parade before we headed off to meet some of the famous folks!

So the Hall of Heroes and remember, getting around can be tough- especially on Saturday.  Take your time, you will get there.  And stop off and get awesome pics of the cosplayers on the way!

This year we were also fortunate to get interview time with Cooper Andrews- star of Shazam.  He was great and very funny.  This was during the writers strike tho so he was not talking specifically about things he has worked on but it was still a great experience for me and my daughter!

With my daughter being older now, we could hang a little bit longer at the con.  We stayed into the afternoon and into the party time at DragonCon.  People were having a great time with food and drink and the dance party was legit epic!!

And sadly that was our time at DragonCon 2023.  Had to make our way back to Florida on Sunday.  I have made hotel reservations for year 6 and staying closer to the action will make our time there even more epic!! See you next year!

DragonCon 2023 meets the X-Men Hellfire Gala

One of the things I enjoy most about DragonCon is when a current pop culutral event explodes at the con.  A couple of years ago after season 1 of Loki, there was such a Loki presence at the con, I felt like we were in Asgard.

This year, the X-Men HellFire Gala dropped on DragonCon with a full on fashion show!  What is the HellFure Gala you may ask?  Well without going into the too many details about Krakoa and boring you with X-Men comic facts, I will just say to you that the HellFire Gala is a mutant and non mutant stunt show- mirroring the Met Gala.  Supes dress up and show out in their best outfits looking to outshine their hero counterparts.

Well this year, our fell Atlanta mutants showed up and showed out to let these non supes know who has the rizz and who doesn't. And Enjoyable and fun time was had by all and proving once again DragonCon has all the style! Check  below for pics and a video of the fashion show!

Lady Dragonstone's DragonCon 2023 Experience

As a certified Dragon Con veteran having attended for four years, this was my first year attending with a media coverage badge. The Producer and I arrived early on Friday morning and the first thing we did was pick up our media badges and were given them by very kind volunteers as soon as the doors opened. After this we headed to the AmericasMart.

Since the line to get in on Friday is always long, and would only get longer on Saturday and Sunday, this time we went in would be the only time. The line wrapped around street corners, and would expand into parking garages and it took about an hour to get through, but once we were inside we canvased every floor of the building and got to see an incredible amount of innovation and creativity. I purchased a few tote bags and posters inside and once we were finished we headed over to the other hotel, and whilst waiting for the hall of heroes to open we were able to see a lot of incredible cosplay.

A true testament to the Summer of 2023 at Dragon Con was the army of Barbies, Kens, and even Allan! There were a few innovative twists on Barbie, including a Harley Quinn and Joker Barbie and Ken, and a Barbenheimer costume as well.  Each and every single one of them were Kenough!

After interviewing, and taking pictures of cosplayers we waited in line for the Hall of Heroes to open. Now, as an ardent fan of 2010s YA Dystopian, YA Fantasy, and the CWs Arrowverse, it's safe to say that I had a lot of fun in the Hall of Heroes this year. I was able to meet Arrows Willa Holland, Shadowhunters Katherine McNamara, The Flash's Carlos Valdes, and the couple that never was on screen, but is in real life; The 100's Bob Morley and Eliza Taylor. All of them were incredibly kind and the Dragon Con assistants working with them were incredibly sweet and understanding and fangriled with me.

Once we crossed the skybridge at 3:00pm we stumbled across the skybridge much to my excitement to see the House of the Dragon Cosplay meetup happening on the roof. We saw every version possible of Rhaenyra Alicent and Daemon. As well as a few Viserys' Aemonds and a Lucerys accompanied by his "grandparents" Corlys and Rhaenys and Ser Harwin Strong.

Saturday we rolled up nice and early to stake out a good spot to watch the parade as we always do, and after this we had the wonderful opportunity of being able to interview Cooper Andrews. Given the current SAG AFTRA Strike we were not able to ask any questions about any current or upcoming projects but we were able to hear about his journey into acting, his experiences on sets, and got a pretty bomb Zach Levi impression!

DragonCon 2023 as always was an incredible experience and I'm counting down the days until I'm back in Atlanta with my favorite nerds.
